How to Draw
Caricatures

Art Lesson:
Caricature

Definition: A caricature is a drawing of a subject in which distinctive features or peculiarities are exaggerated. A regular cartoon drawing does not depend on exaggeration.

Choose one or more features that make a person physically unique. Ask what makes him or her recognizable to others. Your choice(s) will become the focus of the drawing.

Then, you exaggerate this feature. For instance, large ears will become very large ears. And small eyes can become dots.

Don't limit your choices to the face. A tall, slim person can be drawn with thin, spaghetti-looking arms and legs.

Use simple lines for the rest of the features.

Draw animals and inanimate objects as caricatures, also.

Experiment and practice.

Gift Ideas

Draw caricature portraits of your family and friends for their birthdays or during holidays.

Do the drawing on paper or acid-free illustration board. There are boards with smooth and rough surfaces. Smooth surfaces are good for pen and ink. Rough surfaces are good for pencil.

Make a frame with an acid-free mat board carefully using a metal straight edge and mat knife to cut the frame. Or buy a pre-cut mat board frame. Acid-free boards last longer.
